In November 2011, IBM released a refresh of the TADDM 7.2.1 media to address problems with duplicate objects.  Please ensure that you have the latest media before attempting an upgrade from previous releases to TADDM 7.2.1.

Release notes: IBM Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manager 7.2

The IBM® Tivoli® Application Dependency Discovery Manager (TADDM) Version 7 Release 2 gives you the details of configuration items with automated, agentless discovery of the assets and their application dependencies, and it provides a discovery library technology to help leverage data from other sources.

Description

TADDM is a configuration management tool that helps IT operations personnel ensure and improve application availability in application environments. TADDM provides operational staff with a top-down view of applications so that they can quickly understand the structure, status, configuration, and change history of their business-critical applications. When performance and availability problems occur, this view helps the staff to immediately isolate issues and to more effectively plan for application change without disruption. An agent-free creation and maintenance of a Configuration Management Database (TADDM database) is delivered without requiring custom infrastructure modeling. TADDM also provides complete cross-tier dependency maps, topological views, change tracking, event propagation, and detailed reports and analytics.

TADDM 7.2 includes the following new function:
  • Enhanced IPv6 capability
  • VMware ESX 3.4 and 4.0 sensor support
  • VMware Virtual Center sensor support
  • Enhanced pSeries® sensor support
  • Microsoft® Cluster 2003 sensor support
  • Microsoft HyperV sensor support
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 sensor support
  • Microsoft Exchange 2007 sensor support
  • Storage Area Network sensor support
  • Dependency discovery through Cisco NetFlow
  • Enhanced Web UI
  • Enhanced 128-bit encryption
  • Enhanced custom query builder
  • Enhanced serviceability features
  • Network Address Translation support
  • DB2® for z/OS® backend database support

Compatibility issues with earlier versions

You can install TADDM 7.2 for the first time, or you can upgrade to this release. To upgrade to TADDM 7.2, you must have TADDM 7.1.2 Fix Pack 7.1.2.0-TIV-ITADDM-FP0004 or later installed.

TADDM 7.2 allows multiple Citrix license pools per Citrix farm. Existing Citrix license pools are not migrated because there is not sufficient information to do so.

Functions that are deprecated but still supported

The following functions are deprecated but are still supported in TADDM 7.2:
  • The topology clear function in both the UI and the API
  • Sensor discovery of Oracle WebLogic 7 and Oracle WebLogic 8. This function is deprecated because the version of Java™ that is required by this platform is no longer supported.
  • Sensor discovery of IBM WebSphere® 5.1 and IBM WebSphere 6.0. This function is deprecated because the version of Java that is required by this platform is no longer supported.
  • The Product Console (the Java UI)
  • Discovery support for Windows NT® using SNMP
  • Discovery support for the OpenVMS platform
  • Discovery support for Windows® 2000. Microsoft is discontinuing extended support for this platform on 30 June 2010.
  • Use of the Secure Shell (SSH) v1 and v1.5 protocols for discovery
  • The internalTemplatesEnabled property in the collation.properties file, as described in the following example:
    com.collation.internalTemplatesEnabled=false
Valid values are true or false. The default value is false. A value of true specifies a shallow discovery of applications that are running on a target system. A shallow discovery uses the operating system-level credentials of the target system.

If you set this property to true, you receive a CustomAppServer object that represents the application that is running on the target system. You do not need to provide application credentials to enable this property. If you set this property to false, the custom application server seeds for internal templates are created only when the deep sensor that corresponds to the application fails.

With this function enabled (property set to true), the internal templates that TADDM uses to start sensors are used instead to launch custom application server sensors (CustomAppServerSensors), which create objects in TADDM that represent the application that is running on the target system. These custom application server sensors require no credentials. In this discovery mode, template matching is intended only to launch a sensor that is most likely the correct sensor for the running application. Therefore, in this mode, TADDM creates generic application server types, such as WebServer and J2EEServer, rather than the more specific types that a sensor would create, such as ApacheServer or WebSphereServer. The objectType attribute is set to the"best match" type of the running application software. If a credentialed sensor and a custom server both run for the same target during one or more discoveries, the following limitations apply:

    • Given the different nature of the data that is discovered without credentials, objects that are created by this function might not reconcile with artifacts that are created by the Level 3 sensor.
    • Credential-free discovery does not create specific classes. For example, httpd might be an Apache server or another Web server, and therefore, in credential-free mode, is classified only as an HTTP server.

Known problems

Known problems are documented as technotes on the Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manager Support site athttp://www.ibm.com/software/sysmgmt/products/support/IBMTivoliApplicationDependencyDiscoveryManager.html.

This site also includes APARs (problem reports), downloads, and education materials. As problems are discovered and resolved, the IBM Support team updates the knowledge base. By searching the knowledge base, you can quickly find workarounds or solutions to problems.
